The Technic group is one of the 58 new relocation projects announced by the government at the end of October. This specialist in the market for semiconductor manufacturing products aims to renovate and rehabilitate a major abandoned site in Amiens to rebuild brand new production units. Some 40 new employees are expected to be hired for a start-up in 2023.
When the government announced 58 new relocation projects at the end of October, Technic, which specializes in the development and production of products and processes for the electronics industry, announced its plans to renovate and rehabilitate a major abandoned site in Amiens.
The SME wishes to rebuild, for a budget of more than 15 million euros, brand new production units and rely on a new R&D center. The aim is to develop, manufacture and market ultra-technological performance chemicals that are essential for the manufacture of the most advanced semiconductors.
More than 40 jobs could be created. "This is a former chemical distribution site covering 22,000 square meters. It is classified as a high-level Seveso site, in the Amiens industrial zone, near highways and European ports, and close to our historic site in Saint-Denis. We have decided to rebuild the entire facility with state-of-the-art equipment, based on our expertise and know-how. This will make it our fifth and largest factory in France," explains Philippe Vernin, president of the Technic France group, which has about 100 employees and will have a turnover of 20 million euros in 2021. The financial assistance offered by the Region, the Metropolis and the Ministry was a determining factor in the choice of location and will help speed up the project. It is scheduled to start in 2023. With this more competitive site in Amiens, Technic expects to gain market share and reach 10 to 15,000 tons of production within five years.
A very tight semiconductor market
Until now, Asia has accounted for most of the growth and investment in semiconductors. "The current shortage of semiconductors has highlighted Europe's dependence in this area. This has caused national and European authorities to react, and they are now looking to accelerate investment and attract global technology leaders, such as Intel or TSMC. But these new factories will need local suppliers to be able to produce," says the group's president.
Indeed, Covid has reshuffled the cards with sales of computers, tablets, printers, TVs and consoles that have exploded. Crypto-currency mining is drying up the market for graphics chips. Asian foundries are overwhelmed and are therefore focusing on high value-added products. European producers, on the other hand, have refocused on communications, image, security, and automotive," describes Philippe Vernin. Europeans are therefore very well placed in new applications and the outlook is very good. This explains the strong recovery in European investments. Against a backdrop of major logistical tensions, these players need local suppliers who can support their growth and technological developments while meeting the much stricter European environmental standards. Technic is one of the best placed players to relocate in Europe.
Technic, leader in Europe
Thus, European players in the semiconductor sector are looking for capacity and are accelerating their investment plans. Infineon, Villach and D resden, ST micro, Agate and Crolles, Bosch and Global Foundries have announced capacity increases and must also secure their future.
Industrialists are looking to secure their supplies and are worried about the current logistical problems (sea freight). They therefore ask their suppliers to find local production solutions. Technic has become a leader in Europe with its own products, but also because the company manufactures for the European market for global suppliers who are now constrained by the demands of relocation.
There is still a lot of potential in Europe for subcontracting or direct sales. Technic Ultra Pure, the entity that carries the Amiens project, is still very small overall, but it is developing at a rapid pace under the control of Technic France," concludes the president of Technic France. All our French factories are close to saturation. We are optimizing capacity as much as possible by transferring everything that can be transferred from Saint-Denis to the other sites. We have significant growth potential and additional export opportunities. We also have new products with very high potential, the result of our R&D, which require new production capacity. It is our huge R&D effort that gives us the technological edge to ensure our growth potential in Europe and our international development. Our American factory will start up at the end of 2021. Singapore is getting ready and Technic China is building a project."
