Technic Titanium Anodizing Systems
Titanium anodizing is an anodic process of titanium in a conductive bath of acid and more commonly alkaline solutions. The titanium surface converts to an oxide with specific properties such as color or wear resistance. The titanium oxide color is determined by the applied voltage and can range from browns to purples and blues, thru olive and yellows, and back to blue. This color anodization process is typically done in a sulfuric acid bath with a specific voltage for a particular color. The color is produced with light reflecting thru the oxide, bouncing off the base metal, and then reflecting back to the eye in a process called interference coloring. The other common ASM 2488 Type II is a wear resistance or anti-galling process. The properties of the titanium oxide surface are a function of the thickness of the oxide formed with the thickest oxides coming from highly alkaline solutions with high applied voltage. The process steps typically include an alkaline cleaner, rinsing, optional fluoride cleaning step, and finally the anodization bath.
